A Memorable Reunion with JAYASRI and The DADDY

On June 20, 2026, my town had the privilege of hosting one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved reggae duos, JAYASRI. As I mentioned in one of my articles last year, I had the opportunity to watch them perform in Vancouver, British Columbia, where they played to a sold-out crowd. That concert was special, but this one meant even more because this time they came to my hometown.

Sharing the stage with them was another popular Sri Lankan band, The DADDY. Although they are much younger than our generation, I had never really listened to their music before. After seeing them perform live, I can honestly say the critics were absolutely right. They are an incredibly talented group, and they delivered a fantastic performance.

Family makes every reunion even more meaningful. JAYASRI are my cousins, and over the years we’ve shared countless stories and laughs. In particular, Naughty Boy Rohan and I have so much in common. Within our extended family, we were both known as the “notorious two.” From our diaper days onward, there always seemed to be some funny story or mischievous adventure following us around. Even today, our relatives still enjoy bringing up those childhood tales whenever we get together. Looking back now, it’s impossible not to laugh.

The evening itself was beautifully organized by Ceylon Glamour Live Entertainment, and it was truly a spectacular event. One of the highlights for me was getting the opportunity to attend their sound check. It had been over two decades since I last witnessed one of their full-band sound checks, the previous one being in Toronto.

Some things never change. Rohitha was just as focused and meticulous as ever. Every tiny hum, buzz, or squeak had to disappear before the show could begin. That’s simply his style, professional, precise, and committed to delivering the best performance possible.

The concert itself was glamorous and full of energy. The dance floor quickly came alive, helped along by plenty of celebratory drinks. The ladies completely took over the floor, leaving the men with little room to compete! Watching the younger generation dance with their modern styles and new moves made me wonder just how outdated I had become. Yet what impressed me most was seeing Rohitha and Rohan effortlessly keeping up with the younger crowd. Their energy, confidence, and stage presence reminded everyone why they continue to be admired after all these years.

The event also gave me the opportunity to meet several members of the younger generation who helped organize the concert. Their passion and dedication were wonderful to see, and they deserve great credit for putting together such a successful evening.

The following afternoon brought another memorable experience. We gathered at my home for a simple late lunch of coconut rotti and plain tea, a humble meal that reminded us of our Sri Lankan roots. For a couple of hours we opened what I like to call our “old gossip bag,” sharing family stories, childhood memories, and plenty of laughter. Those conversations were every bit as enjoyable as the concert itself.

Later that day, I accompanied them to visit one of their friends, someone I had never met before. I was introduced to the internationally renowned Sri Lankan sculptor Lalith Senanayake. It was an absolute pleasure meeting such a gifted artist and his lovely family. During the visit, I had the opportunity to see some photos of BIG BOYD, his impressive sculpture currently on display at the Edmonton Expo Centre. I also toured his studio, where I saw several remarkable completed sculptures along with many fascinating works still in progress. His creativity and craftsmanship left a lasting impression on me, and I know that visit deserves an article of its own in the near future.

As every good reunion eventually does, this one came to an end. By evening, the rain had begun to fall, making our farewells feel even more emotional. We said our goodbyes with smiles, gratitude, and the hope that it won’t be too long before our paths cross again.

Some weekends become memories that stay with us forever. This was one of them a celebration of family, friendship, music, culture, and the special joy of reconnecting with our roots, no matter where life takes us.
