Maris Stella 83 Batch Reunites to Honour past Teachers and Principals

Past pupils of Maris Stella College alumni gathered recently in Seeduwa, Sri Lanka, to felicitate their former teachers and principals. The reunion, titled “Apita Mathakai” (We Remember), was a nostalgic and emotional gathering of Rev. Brothers, Rev. Sisters, teachers, and former students from the famed 83 batch. It’s been 40 years since the batch left school, and this is the first time such an event has been hosted.

What a joy it was for a group of former students to pay tribute to their previous teachers and principals! The event demonstrated the long-term impact of education and the strength of shared memories. It was a fitting tribute to their dedication and hard work, as well as a testament to the long-lasting impact they had on the lives of their students. As old friends reunited and reminisced about their school days, the reunion was filled with emotions and joy.

The event began with the invitees being escorted to the music of traditional drummers. The 83 batch mates presented betel leaves and lighting of the traditional oil lamp took place during the welcome ceremony in the banquet hall. Rev. Sister Jacintha offered a prayer in accordance with school traditions. Then it was time to sing the collegiate anthem. Regardless of age or rank, everyone stood up and sang the anthem in unison, demonstrating remarkable solidarity and emotion.

Rev. Brother Joseph Peiris offered a prayer for all deceased teachers and batch mates. In commemoration, a few batch mates lit the oil lamp and placed a bouquet of flowers. In the background, a touching video presentation showed each deceased individual.

It was time to greet everyone. Ramesh, the current president of the 83 Legends Committee, offered the welcome message.

Then another crucial event occurred. Each batch mate shared with the audience each teacher’s accomplishments and contributions. Every teacher’s thoughts must have journeyed back in time throughout the speech, reminiscing great moments and sacrifices they had made on behalf of the school and their beloved students. They were given the opportunity to share their thoughts after the teachers were introduced.

With great pride and enthusiasm the teachers shared memories of their time at Maris Stella, including stories of challenges they faced, student experiences, and extracurricular activities.

During their addresses, all teachers praised and admired Brother Clinton Perera for the guidance and encouragement they received during their school years. In his address, teacher Mr. Gamini Fernando continued, “After Brother Clinton took over the school, his fearless decisions and commitment made the much-needed change to the school.” It paved the way for a fresh start on the road to success. Many parents desired that their children attend Maris Stella.”

Mrs. Nalini, teacher and deputy principal, expressed gratitude, saying, “It was an amazing experience to see all of our old students and teachers again.” With much joy and passion, we laughed and talked about our old memories. It was a day to remember and cherish for the rest of my life.” “It was wonderful to see my old students again after 40 years; we are very grateful to the 83 legends for giving this opportunity”

As a mark of respect and gratitude each past Rev. Brother, Rev, Sister and teacher was offered a gift and a memento.

Graeme Labrooy, a former Sri Lanka test cricketer and batch mate, addressed the gathering, saying, “The backing and support I received from the former principal was amazing.” Brother Clinton’s understanding of people, patience, and guidance laid the groundwork for my success in life, and I am deeply moved by this blessing.“

The gathering was a highly significant experience for those who attended. It gave them the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and mentors, as well as reflect on the impact Maris Stella had on their lives. “It’s a beautiful day, full of love and gratitude,” said one former student. We were able to relive some of our happiest memories. “I am ecstatic.”

Many classmates reminisced about their teachers with enthusiasm and grace. They thanked their previous teachers and principals for their contributions to shaping their lives and professions. They talked about their devotion and commitment.

The speeches were emotional!

Everyone has been enjoying and appreciating the music, food, beverages, and courteous service since the morning. Many of the batch mates contributed by singing and dancing to the melodies of Neville. Batch mates, the renowned combo “JayaSri,” made substantial contributions. Kudos to all!

The passage of time has been brisk. Then it was time for the proceedings to come to a close. Chinthaka, the chairman of the event committee, gave the vote of appreciation.

Everyone left with a heavy heart as the reunion came to an end. The attendees promised to stay in touch and to honour their Maris Stella heritage. The occasion served as a reminder that, while time passes and people change, friendship and the spirit of education persist.

“Apita Mathakai” captured the mood of the occasion. It was a means for former 83 batch mates to honour and recall their shared experiences at Maris Stella, as well as to celebrate the bonds they had established.
